He began his motorsport career in Mexico, securing the Mexican Formula 3 championship in 1991. Fernández then moved to the United States to compete in the Indy Lights series, where he finished third in the championship. In 1993, Fernández made his debut in the CART IndyCar World Series, initially driving for Galles Racing.
