The film portrays the ambitions and struggles in a relationship among members of a middle-class family.

Jeevanlal, who is a thief, lives in a small village in India. He is married to Sita and together they have a daughter Meena and a son, Dharmchand.

A devotee of God Jagganath lives with his wife and children and maintains his livelihood by begging.
